Solving Inventory Exceptions at Scale: A WMS Playbook

In a high-volume warehouse, every inventory exception is a clock ticking against the customer promise. The longer an item sits in the Problem Solving area, the wider the delivery window slips — and the harder it becomes to recover.

My team owns the product strategy for the Problem Solving Domain inside our Warehouse Management System. The mission is simple in words, hard in execution: minimize the time every item spends in recovery.

Over the last year, three principles have guided our roadmap:

  1. Detect early. The best exception is the one you catch before it becomes a fire drill. We instrumented granular signals across automation throughput, putaway accuracy, and pick-path anomalies so operators see issues in seconds, not hours.
  2. Route decisively. Not every exception needs the same skill set. We built intelligent routing that sends each issue to the right resolution queue — reducing handoffs and eliminating the "who owns this?" friction.
  3. Close the loop. Every resolved exception is a data point. We feed outcomes back into the system to identify systemic root causes and prevent recurrence, turning reactive recovery into proactive prevention.

The result is a measurable drop in recovery time and, more importantly, a direct protection of our Customer Delivery On-Time metric. That is the North Star that keeps the entire domain aligned.
